For a 4th consecutive year, the Festival d’opéra de Québec collaborates with Jeunesses Musicales Canada to promote promising young artists in the initial stages of their careers.

Opera in three acts, composed by a 25-year-old Georges Bizet to a libretto by Eugène Cormon and Michel Carré, Les Pêcheurs de perles tells the story of a vow of eternal friendship between two men, threatened by their former love for the same woman, Leïla. The fishermen Zurga and Nadir have indeed once upon a time decided to give up on this love in order to preserve their friendship, a wish that will soon be put to the test.

Leïla, arriving on the island led by Nourabad and whose song is meant to protect the fishing village from the crushing waves, is herself torn between her love for Nadir and her oath as a priestess, which requires from her that she remains chaste and pure. This love triangle appears to lead straight to disaster: is it possible to renounce a love so intense, to face Zurga’s jealousy and to forgive Nadir’s betrayal? Unless a mysterious necklace reveals past secrets… The celebrated “Au fond du temple saint, parée de fleurs et d’or, une femme apparaît”, with its dreamy and intoxicating melody, is certainly one of the most enchanting lyrical duets from the French opera repertoire.
